The results are presented as fixed effects and random effects summary odds ratio (OR) or risk ratio (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) for clinical and bacteriological outcomes, and side-effects, respectively. The methodological quality of the included trials was assessed using the Cochrane criteria. Eleven trials with 2168 participants with acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis were identified.
